AXEMEN

Fire Fighter’s Motorcycle Club

Ohio Chapter # 3

JULY 2011

Last month, I provided information to you regarding membership requirements.  The information is taken directly from the Rules, Bylaws, and Constitution as passed down to all chapters from the Michigan Home Chapter.  Please note that this is “Club Business” and the information should be handled appropriately.

Attendance

You must make at least three (3) meetings or club events per year.  If you do not meet these requirements, you may be voted out of the club at any regular meeting by a majority of those present.  It is not the intention of the Ohio Chapter 3 Club to lose members.  Therefore, we do consider extenuating circumstances when considering a member for removal from our chapter.

Dues

Dues are currently $10.00 per month and are payable in January – March.  We currently have different ways available to make these payments that include online, mail, and directly to Treasurer Kent Wareham.  For the online method, please contact Sergeant at Arms Barnhart.  Also, it was voted on and approved that members shall pay for the entire year at a cost of $120.00.  Probationary members shall pay the pro-rated amount based on the month he joins along with a $50.00 initiation fee that allows him to obtain his colors.  You are not considered a member of our chapter until those requirements are met.

Ø      The late penalty is $10.00 per month for each month you are behind in dues.  Those members who are six (6) months behind in dues may be voted out at any regular meeting by a majority of those present.

Colors

Your colors are valuable and not to be treated lightly or carelessly.  Losing your colors or leaving them unsecured is not acceptable.  Colors are to be worn at all meetings and club functions whenever possible.  In the absence of colors, a hat, t-shirt, sweatshirt or jacket with the club logo on it is acceptable.  Members attending a club function and are not wearing their club colors or other identifying apparel (as mentioned above) will be assessed a $10.00 fine payable to the chapter.

Colors are property of the Axemen Motorcycle Club and will be returned to the club if you resign or are voted out.

Note:  Beginning last month, I began picking Axemen members at random for the Newsletter Feature.  If you do not wish to participate, please let me know so I can remove your name from the hat.  Otherwise, if you are willing to participate, please feel free to submit your information to me at any time.  I will save it to be used when your name is drawn.  You have the option of writing your own or submitting the info to me and I will write it up.  Thank you, Kevin

FEATURED AXEMEN

Tim Herb

I am a 20-year member of Columbus Fire and with 6 years prior to that at Grandview heights.  I somehow have 26 professional years in the Fire Service; a paramedic for 25. Funny thing is, I still feel like a new boy!  Assuming that politics and my health cooperate, I hope to continue for several more. I’ve been SO lucky to have a successful career doing something I truly love!

Ten years ago, I was privileged to be promoted to Lieutenant and for the past 8 years have been assigned to EMS-12 on 3-unit. For those of you who may not know, I oversee EMS operations in Battalion 2; 15 medics in 5 stations.

I have only been riding since 2008 so I am definitely a new rider.  Prior to that, I always admired motorcycles, but I felt that my desire for speed would have spelled disaster on two wheels!  After turning 40 however, I decided it was time to get that urge for speed under control and learn to ride.  With the help of a couple of good friends and Harley’s Rider Edge course, I discovered a whole new experience: the thrill of riding a motorcycle!  At times, I wished I had done it earlier in life but I honestly think that waiting until later has made me a better rider.  So, I had my endorsement by the end of 2008.  The following January (yes, January!!) I bought my first (current) bike; a 2007 Road King.  It was delivered on January 15, 2009 and the temperature outside was 15 below zero!  I had to look at that beautiful machine sitting the garage for 3 months before I could ride it…. UGH!!

For me, riding has always been something for me and my teenage daughter, Tabbi (Tabitha) to do together.  We love to pick a remote spot on the map, plan an approximate route of state highways, and point the Road King in roughly that direction.  It’s a great way to keep connected to one of my greatest inspirations and see some things we might not otherwise see.

I joined the Axemen in early 2010. I wanted to do something purposeful with my newfound passion for biking and when I learned of the Axemen’s mission of charity and patriotism, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of.  What an opportunity to be a part of something “bigger!” It’s also an opportunity to teach Tabbi the importance of charity and patriotism. Besides, those of you who have met her know how she loves a group ride!  That kid LOVES loud pipes!

With all that, I would be a complete jackass if I didn’t mention the support of my wife of 25 years.  Heidi has tolerated 26 of the Fire Service and she completely supports my Axemen activities.  She actually shopped for (and found) my bike on the internet. Truth be known, she was working for her Master’s degree and it was a way to get Tabbi and me out of the house while she studied.  Now the plan is to get her endorsement and a bike next year!
